The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and soon they will face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
